The Big Tasty, a North Carolina contest sponsored by Blue Ridge Food Ventures in Asheville, just got a bit bigger (and tastier!).
The Big Tasty is a contest that gives food entrepreneurs a chance to bring their innovative food product or service out of the kitchen closet and into the market. The winner of The Big Tasty will receive $2,500 and 100 free hours' use of the BRFV commercial kitchen space and equipment. And now, thanks to Greensboro-based grocery retailer The Fresh Market, the winner will also receive shelf placement of their product in the company's 15 NC stores.
Blue Ridge Food Ventures (BRFV) is a food incubator that provides upstart local farmers, chefs and foodies a place to make their artisan products and helps them to start a business in the food industry. In addition to making available an FDA-compliant, 11,000-square-foot commercial kitchen, BRFV also offers support in terms of product development, guidance on regulatory issues, business planning, packaging and label design, and more.
With this new news, BRFV has extended the deadline for entering The Big Tasty to October 31. The competition is open to any NC resident with an idea for a new food product or service (excluding packaged meat or dairy, low-acid products or products containing more than .5% alcohol). All you need to do to enter is pay a $10 entry fee and submit an application that explains, illustrates and introduces your concept.
Semi-finalists will be selected in mid-November and will receive one-on-one coaching from food business experts early next year. Final presentations and taste tests with panel of professional judges (including representatives from The Fresh Market) will be made in March and winners will be announced in April.
