Charleston City Market Wins SATW Phoenix Award

The Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) closed out their annual convention in Indianapolis last week with the highly anticipated Awards Luncheon honoring the best in travel writing, travel photography and travel organizations. Since 1969, SATW has bestowed the Phoenix Award to recognize conservation and preservation efforts to individuals and organizations who have made an impact in their community or in the tourism industry as a whole.

One of the six Phoenix Award honorees for this past year was Charleston City Market, nominated by SATW member Lynn Seldon. One of the oldest public City Markets in the U.S., Charleston City Market was once an integral cog in the commercial wheel of Charleston. And, although the City Market had become a local tourism entity in more recent years, the decay had taken its toll on the history, vendors and visitors to the public attraction. Recently, the market has undergone extensive renovations hoping to rejuvenate this important historical venue, increase its viability as a tourist destination and unique shopping alternative, and preserving its role as a living, vibrant piece of Charleston's history.

The Phoenix Award is a testament that Charleston City Market has, in fact, achieved its goal. Congratulations to such an important piece of Charleston's history and future.
