34th Annual King Mackerel Tournament in Southport, NC
This is a big fish story. No, seriously....a BIG fish!
Southport, North Carolina is home to the largest King Mackerel tournament in the United States, the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament, attracting more than 450 boats. What began as an event to showcase the great fall fishing that the Southport-Oak Island area has to offer 34 years ago now pays out more than $100,000 guaranteed including $25,000 for the largest king mackerel caught during the tournament.
This years event starts with registration on Thursday, October 4th. Boats will check out between 7-9am on Friday at Lockwood Folly Inlet, Baptist Assembly Pier at Fort Caswell, Little River, Masonboro Inlet and Snows Cut. The action really heats up Saturday between 3-4pm when the boats line up to weigh in at Southport Marina before the scales close.
Don't fish? There's still plenty of excitement going on at the Southport Marina Thursday night with entertainment from 4-8pm and Saturday afternoon with an old-fashioned fish fry and entertainment starting at 3pm and the awards ceremony at 7pm.
Tournament details are at www.usopenkmt.com.
