As a 1983 Virginia Military Institute graduate and a huge minor league baseball fan (he’s been to more than 60 ballparks across the country), Lynn likes to keep up with VMI alumni playing in the minor leagues. We just learned that former VMI pitcher Coby Cowgill has been promoted to the Texas Rangers' South Atlantic League (Class A) affiliate, the Hickory Crawdads. He was scheduled to join the team Monday night in Hagerstown, Md., for the opener of a three-game series.
Now, Cowgill will skip a return trip to the Northwest League and will join the Crawdads, a team seeking a second-half division title. Hickory currently stands at 27-22 in the second half, and is tied with the West Virginia Power atop the South Atlantic League's Northern Division.
The Hickory Crawdads are Texas' low-A squad and play at L.P. Frans Stadium in the heart of Hickory. The next team on the Rangers player development listing is their high Single-A team (Carolina League), the Myrtle Beach Pelicans …where we hope to see this VMI man on the mound soon (it’s a beautiful ballpark....even if it is called TicketReturn.com Field).
