North Carolina Hot Sauce Contest

Okay....we didn't even know that there was such a thing. But six years ago, Julia Overton, owner of Stovall's Gifts in historic downtown Oxford, North Carolina (just 40 miles north of the Triangle area), had the idea to host an event in her store to promote NC products. And when she decided to highlight the fact that Granville County was home to Bailey Farms, the largest pepper producer/distributor on the Eastern Seaboard, a marriage was made.

Now recognized by the state as the North Carolina Hot Sauce Contest, the event is held annually on the second Saturday in September. This year, that will be September 8th from 11am to 4pm. And it's grown (last years' event saw more than 7,000 people) from Stovall's Gifts to three streets in downtown Oxford....Main, Hillsboro and College Streets.

Highlighting NC's finest hot sauces and barbecue sauces, the event also features breweries and wineries sampling adult beverages to complement the sauce extravaganza, the NC Pepper Eating Contest, a BBQ chicken cook-off, free horse and carriage rides, a car show, plant sale, activities for the kids, and all of the great amenities that downtown Oxford has to offer including the Granville County Museum and their September Sensations Bazaar, great shopping, restaurants, and more.
