Trail Planned for Hitchcock Creek in Rockingham, North Carolina

A dam on Hitchcock Creek in Rockingham, North Carolina has been a nuisance for environmentalists, migrating fish, and fans of the great outdoors. But that appears to be a thing of the past. The dam has recently been removed and plans are underway to create a 12-mile blue trail for water enthusiasts and landlubbers alike.

Located in south Central North Carolina, about 70 east of Charlotte, Rockingham already provides significant scenic and natural areas due to its unique location along the Pee Dee River & National Wildlife Refuge. Now, with the help of American Rivers, local elected officials, fishing and boating groups, landowners, and other interested parties have begun planning for the blue trail. By creating a community asset that will appeal to canoeists, kayakers, boaters and fisherman, the Hitchcock Creek Blue Trail will also act as a model of how other communities can repurpose a natural habitat to create both an economic driver as well as a sustainable recreational resource.
